Magazine Distribution- Traditional
On the Magazine Publisher website, it gives a a startup guide on how to distribute and develop your magazine. It first gives 'The Planning Phase' which is the costs associated with publishing, total revenue, and operational costs. Next the website gives sources of revenue that you will need. They say there are 3 main sources driven by revenue which is advertisers, subscriptions, and newsstand sales. For revenue, the person wanting to distribute the magazine needs to ask themselves if the advertisers are willing to pay for the magazine and ads, and if the market is big enough to support the magazine. Then, they talk about understanding the costs like general costs; office selection, staff selection, direct mail lists, newsstand development/distribution list. They also add under costs the failure of magazine publishing due to over staffing, poor magazine focus, poor management, and lack of 'mission'. Finally, 'The Execution' is issuing the first product of your magazine.
